Finding jeans that fit right and make you feel your best is one of the biggest clothing-challenges that many of us face.  It can take years, a lot of trial and error and a lot of money wasted on styles that we realise aren’t for us after we have bought them.

However, there are a few tips and tricks you can follow that will help you on your hunt for the perfect pair of denim.  These are my nine tips that will help you to find jeans that make you feel your best, and how to style them so that you get the best out of your trusty slacks.

9 Tips For Finding The Perfect Jeans

FIND YOUR BODY SHAPE

Every body shape is different, therefore there is a style that will be most suited to your shape.  Choosing the wrong style of jeans for your figure can end up making the areas you are least confident in look more prominent, such as belly fat, muffin tops and sagging or flatness in the wrong places.

Use the diagram below to find the shape that represents your body best, and you can then see the styles that will look the most flattering on you.

FIND THE RIGHT FIT

Once you know what to look for to make you look your best, spend extra time in the dressing room to make sure you buy the right size.  Most high street retailers these days have a petite, tall, plus size and even maternity range in the jeans department, so try on multiple different sizes and ranges until you find those that fit you best.

If there are still some areas that could do with being taken in or shortened, then don’t be afraid to take them to a tailor who will be able to make the necessary alterations so your new jeans fit you like a glove.

A well fitting pair of jeans will last you years and you will be reaching for them more than anything else in your wardrobe, so paying an extra £10-£20 to have them altered is more than worth the investment.

HIGH WAISTED WILL FLATTER MOST BODY TYPES

While there is a different style to suit every shape, high waisted are the exception in most cases as these will do favours for most women in some way or another.

As well as elongating your legs, high waisted can also ‘suck in’ any areas around your torso that you might not be so fond of. Even if you are lucky enough to be a taller lady, high waisted jeans will still make you look amazing as they create a slim, elegant silhouette no matter what your natural shape is.

DARK OR BLACK DENIM FOR DRESSY OCCASIONS

Who says you can’t wear jeans to a dressy occasion?  The trick is, choosing the right style and wash for the event you’re going to.  Dark and black denim always seems more formal than blue denim and can sometimes be passed off as trousers without having to scrimp on comfort.

Pair your favourite dark wash or black jeans with a blouse or a cami, and add a blazer and some simple heels for any ‘smart’ occasion such as a meeting, party or even possibly a job interview.

WEARING JEANS WITH ANKLE BOOTS…

Ever been in that situation where you are trying to pair jeans with ankle boots but something doesn’t look quite right?  You’re probably trying to ‘tuck in’ your jeans to your boots, but because you’re wearing booties, there isn’t a lot of shoe space for the fabric to go therefore you end up with bunching up at your knees and ankles half through the day.

DON’T OVERWASH YOUR DENIM

You don’t need to wash your jeans every time you wear them.  Every time your denim goes through the washing machine, you cause a little bit more damage to the stretch and shape of your jeans and over time they will sag and fade, making them appear less flattering.

Try to wash your jeans no more than every 5-7 wears.  This might sound extreme if you are in the habit of washing your jeans daily, but unless you are wearing your jeans to work in the garden or on a construction site, they really do not need washing as much as you think.

If you want to freshen up your jeans between wears then spot clean any marks or stains with a damp cloth and hang them by a window to air if you’re afraid of any nasty smells.

CHOOSE JEANS WITH POCKETS THAT ARE CENTERED

Back pocket positioning on your jeans is much more important to creating a flattering illusion than you think.  Larger pockets that are placed perfectly will create the impression of a round butt, which is usually what most women want.  Avoid jeans with pockets that are placed too far apart, or too low down as this will create the impression of wideness or sagging.

AVOID CAMEL TOE

Ever wondered how to avoid the awfully embarrassing camel toe?  There is a lesser known trick that will help you to avoid this in future when choosing jeans.

Look for jeans which have a zipper that goes all the way down to the crotch. Zippers that only make it halfway down, end up leaving fabric in that area that isn’t so great at hiding the shape of you know what.  Choosing a jean with a full-length zipper, means that the seam placement will not allow the fabric to sit in ways that highlight your lady bits.

CHOOSE JEANS WITH BELT LOOPS

Belt loops are really important for allowing versatility in your jeans.  You want to have a selection of jeans that can be worn with multiple different outfits and for different occasions, so don’t allow any limitations by choosing denim that you can’t finish off with a belt.

A couple of years ago, jegging style jeans were all the rage as they are very slimming and arguably more comfortable, however, it’s not as easy to style these and if you do have a pair that are slightly loose around the waist, you can’t fix this quickly by adding a belt.
