Having a pleasant smelling home is one of my favourite ways to make my house a calming and welcoming place to be in. Here are eleven ideas for ways to keep your home smelling wonderful, and how to tackle the key causes of bad smells around the house.

11 Easy Ways to Make Your Home Smell Incredible

ESSENTIAL OIL COTTON BALLS

Try adding a few drops of your favourite essential oils to some cotton wool balls, and dotting these around your home in discreet locations to make your home smell fresh, and keep the bugs at bay!

ZOFLORA IN THE BIN

Your bin is one of the key areas that harbours bad odours in your home. To minimise this, take a small square of felt or absorbent fabric, and soak in a cap full of Zoflora. Keep this at the bottom of your bin underneath the bin bag to absorb and leakages and keep the bin smelling clean.

PUT SHOES AWAY AND USE DRY SHAMPOO

Another culprit for causing bad smells in our homes is having a load of loose shoes in the hallway or bedroom. Find a way to store your shoes tidily in a cupboard or under the stairs, and if any are particularly cheesy, spray a little dry shampoo into the shoe to absorb dampness and tackle the smell.

CLIP AIR FRESHENERS TO YOUR VENTS

To give your home a boost of your favourite welcoming fragrance, try clipping air fresheners to the air vents and you will see that the scent travels through your house super quickly!

KEEP SOFT FURNISHINGS CLEAN

Fabrics naturally absorb moisture, so over time cushions, sofas and rugs can start to smell nasty from collecting sweat, food spills and even pet odours.  Keep these areas smelling their best by giving them a wipe down with warm soapy water every month or so, and to really freshen them up, try adding a few drops of your favourite essential oils to a spray bottle with some warm water, and use that as a natural deodoriser around your home.

DIY NATURAL ROOM SPRAY

I love anything DIY that I can make to maintain my home.  Natural room sprays are a brilliant way to keep your home smelling wonderful, without having to pay out lots of money for store bought products, which often include nasty chemicals.  Check out this post for some wonderful DIY room spray recipes!

PLANTS

Plants are not only a soothing and welcoming addition to your home, but they are also known to naturally purify the air, and remove many toxins from the atmosphere around you. Many floral plants also have a strong and sweet natural smell, so keeping lots of greenery in your home is a great way to keep the place smelling lovely!

USE VINEGAR TO REMOVE BAD SMELLS

If there is a strong and unpleasant smell in your home, perhaps a spillage or the smell of food lingering in your kitchen, try letting a bowl of one part boiling water to one part white wine vinegar sit in the room for a few hours, and you will notice that the vinegar will cleanse the air of the foul aroma.

KEEP WASHING MACHINE CLEAN

Over time, dirt and gunk build up in our washing machine, particularly in the seals and detergent well. As a result, our clothes are being cleaned in a dirty machine and will come out smelling of mildew. As you hang those musty clothes up in your home to dry, that rather unpleasant smell is sure to travel throughout your home, so make sure that you are cleaning your machine regularly to avoid germy clothes and a stinky home.

BOILING WATER AND ESSENTIAL OIL IN THE SINK

The kitchen sink is another part of your home which can harbour a lot of bacteria, leading to foul smells. Once a week, try putting some bleach down the drain to kill germs, and then fill the sink with boiling water, and about ten drops of peppermint or lavender oil.   The heat of the water will warm the water and the fragrance will pass through your home amazingly.

EUCALYPTUS IN THE SHOWER

Last but not least, try hanging a natural eucalyptus branch in your shower, and the steam when you’re washing will make your bathroom smell amazing!  Plus, the smell of eucalyptus is known to be super calming!
