Dresses are my absolute favourite thing to wear all year round when I want to feel super girly and feminine, while also seeming like I have tried too hard. However, dresses aren’t always the most weather appropriate option when it comes to winter.

However, I really do believe that snow, wind and rain doesn’t need to mean that you’re stuck with wearing jeans, jumpers and boots all season.  That’s why, I have put together my top tips for how to wear a dress, even in winter.

7 Ways To Wear A Dress In Winter

Any style and length of a dress can be adapted somehow to suit the season, however maxi dresses, in particular, are the easiest to style for cold temperatures.

The full length allows for extra cover up, keeping you warmer. Plus maxi dresses look lovely with all the style of outerwear making it much easier for you to put a full outfit together.

Layering a pair of leggings underneath a full-length dress is a great way to get the warmth that you need without compromising your style.  Maxi dresses are so versatile and the extra fabric means that nobody will even notice that you are wearing leggings underneath!

Full-length coats are at the height of fashion right now, and it’s an added bonus that they are one of the most effective articles of clothing when it comes to keeping warm in extremely chilly conditions.  If you’re wearing a full-length coat, then it doesn’t matter what you’re wearing underneath as your outfit will be entirely covered whilst outside.

Forget dresses – I dare you to just go out in your PJ’s and hide the fact by wearing a full-length coat! 😉

Dark colours are generally easier to style for winter if you’re just venturing into the idea of dresses in the winter.  Colours such as black, burgundy, navy and grey are much more understated, and you will find it much easier to spot matching accessories to tie the outfit together.

Pale, brighter colours often give off a tropical or summery vibe, making it feel more like you’re just continuing to rock your summer wardrobe even though the season passed.

Pairing an outfit with a stylish pair of ankle boots will never not be an awesome way to add some winter wow-factor.  Boots are super easy to style with almost anything and give off a super comfy, cozy autumnal vibe.

If you’re growing tired of the ever-popular ankle boot trend, then try something a little different such as over the knee or calf boots.  I personally think that these look the best with shorter, skater style dresses for a more whimsical look.

People are very much one side of the fence or the other when it comes to this trend, and although I am yet to give this one a go myself, I think that styling a long sleeve sweater or shirt under a strappy dress is such an interesting way to put together a winter-appropriate outfit.

You can try almost any style of shirt, sweater or dress in order to create completely different looks with all different combinations.  This can also be a great way to add a bit of colour to what would be an otherwise all black or all white outfit.

Finally, try pairing your outfit with a faux fur gilet, scarf or coat for a serious dash of elegance.  Not only will faux fur pieces add a tonne of warmth to any outfit, but these items also look so stylish and classy no matter how you decide to style them.

There’s nothing I like more in my wardrobe, than practicality and sophistication paired together – and that’s exactly the word I would use to describe any faux fur piece of clothing.
