Poor people love to spend money they don’t have.  And they love to spend all the money that they do have on things they don’t need, leaving them in a position where they don’t have enough for the essentials 🙇🏼‍♀️

Now, not everyone who is short of money is guilty of this, but there are a huge number of people who earn a very comfortable living but still end up living a poor lifestyle because they don’t spend and manage their money in the right way. 

If you’re one of those people, then you know how stressful living this way can be.  You get depressed about living paycheck to paycheck, so to cheer yourself up you go out and buy yourself some new clothes…. 🤔

But what you should really be doing is re-assessing your finances and putting a plan together for what you can cut down on, and how you can begin to start building up your emergency fund and long term savings.

So today I wanted to share with you some of the things that poor people like to waste their money on, all of which can be cut from your budget to start saving money for the more important things in life.

This isn’t supposed to make you feel judged – I am just hoping to help people who are struggling with managing their money, realise some of the ways that they’re holding themselves back.  I used to be the exact same way and mounted up thousands in credit card debt in just a couple of years. 

I’m hoping that by seeing this post, it can serve as a wake up call and you will stop spending money you don’t have on things you don’t need.

9 Things Poor People Spend Money On

CARS 🏎

Have you ever noticed that some of the wealthiest people you know drive fairly modest cars?  The rich are more interested in investing their money long term so they can retire early and live financially free.

While a brand new car might create a temporary sense of happiness, it’s far better to hold onto your modest car which you know you can rely on for a little bit longer.  At least that’s what I’ve been telling myself about my noisy 2014 Fiat 500!

CLOTHES 👚

Those people that you always see in new clothes looking super trendy and stylish….? Yeah, they’re probably broke.  Keeping up with trends is expensive – the fashion industry made it that way on purpose! 

The rich would rather invest in a capsule wardrobe full of high quality timeless pieces, instead of spending money every month on fast fashion that they will wear a couple of times before it’s out of season.

GADGETS 🎮

That person who has the latest iPhone, a snazzy laptop, AirPods, tablet and Apple Watch probably doesn’t have a penny to their name.  Contracts and easily accessible finance plans allow us to get the latest technology in an “affordable” way without realising how much we’re spending.

But if you really want to save money then you need to keep your monthly outgoings as low as possible, so just stick with your trusty tech as long as possible before you buy a new model and if you really are drooling over a particular product, then perhaps ask your friends and family to all chip in as a birthday or Christmas present instead. 

FAST FOOD 🍟

Too much fast food will make you overweight and broke.  If you really are serious about saving money, then food is one of the areas that most people find the biggest cutbacks can be made.  How many times a week do you honestly buy food out… whether that’s a can of Coke from a corner shop, a sneaky McDonalds at lunchtime or a full spread dinner out with friends on a Friday night?

Going to restaurants is a lovely treat and way to spend time with friends from time to time, but if you really want to be saving money then you will need to learn to make food at home and keep the dinner dates to once a month at most. 

BAD HABITS 🚬

Smoking, lottery tickets, gambling, fizzy soda’s etc…. They all fall into the same category – bad habits that cost you money and do you no favours

You could save yourself £30 a month just by switching to water instead of your daily soda, £40+ a month by giving up the lottery tickets (you’re not going to win) and £200 month by quitting a 20 a day smoking habit – not counting the money could save on healthcare costs later in life if you do quit. 

If you’re guilty of all three of these, that’s around £300 a month – you could save yourself or £3600 a year! 

DEBT 💳

Poor people use credit cards to be able to buy things they can’t afford.

Rich people utilize credit cards to their advantage to improve their credit score, earn interest on their money and earn reward points by spending on their card

There are plenty of credit cards that offer cashback and rewards for spending every month, but it’s important to pay off the card in full every month so that you don’t pay interest. 

There are also people who take out a 0% credit card for 12 months, use it for all their purchases, meanwhile earning interest on their current account balance – then pay off the card at the end of the 12 months.

These are ways that rich people use credit cards to their advantage 👆🏼

Poor people use credit to spend money on clothes, gadgets and holidays which they can’t really afford, so pay monthly interest charges into the £100s and damage their credit score in the process

If you want to improve your finances and only take one thing from this post, just please quit using credit cards to spend money you don’t have. 

HEALTH AND DIET PRODUCTS 🥗

Most people want to be in better shape or improve their health in some way.  It’s a great thing to be aware of your body and take care of yourself, but it’s not an excuse to overspend

Companies make millions every year by flogging new miracle products to consumers who are looking for a quick fix to their problems – dieting pills, detox teas, hair growth supplements, skincare products and so on.  

Truth is, some products probably work and some don’t, but it’s very difficult to know what will work for you without buying the product and trying it out, and before you know it you’ve spent a fortune on products that might not even work for you.

Honestly, most problems can be fixed or at least improved with a balanced diet, drinking plenty of water, exercise, quitting habits such as smoking, sugar addiction and fizzy drinks and getting plenty of sleep.

Beyond that, you’re better to seek the advice of a doctor to recommend treatments instead of wasting money on quick fixes that probably aren’t going to work anyway.

DRINKING 🍺

Poor people waste money on drinking much more than financially stable. people do.

People sometimes turn to drink to cope with money worries, and those who manage their money poorly are more likely to pay for expensive drinks at restaurants, go on nights out at the weekend, and even feel tempted to show off by buying rounds of drinks for their friends when out on the town – how crazy! 

If you’re trying to save your money, then opt for water when you are out and about, and if you enjoy a drink with friends, then make it an occasional treat, or have them round for dinner and drinks at your house.  A bottle of wine from the supermarket can cost less than a single glass in some fancy places!
