Keeping slim and fit as you get older is not easy for most adults unless you are blessed with amazing genes. 

So whats the secret of those people who always look lean and healthy? How do they do it?

I have put together a list of some of those habits that help maintain that enviable figure of the people that stick by these ways of life.

I’m not saying that if you want to lose weight or keep slim that you can never enjoy a drink. However, it’s no secret that alcoholic drinks often contain a lot of empty calories.

A large 250ml glass of 13% wine can contain more than 200 calories or a standard 175ml glass can set you back more than 160 calories.

If you’re looking to stay slim, then try to save the alcoholic beverages for special occasions and reach of water instead. Water is not only calorie free, but consuming plenty of water will speed up your metabolism.

THEY DRINK LOTS OF WATER

The benefits of drinking water are plentiful. People who stay slim will often drink the recommended daily intake of two litres of water.

Drinking this much water will dramatically improve your overall health in a number of ways including: flushing toxins from the body, speeding up metabolism, reducing anxiety by hydrating your body, reducing food cravings and boosting performance in exercise.

THEY COOK THEIR OWN MEALS

If you’re looking to keep your weight down, it’s always best to prepare all of your own meals at home.

Home cooking allows you to know every single ingredient that goes into your food, that way there are no hidden empty calories from oils, additives and fatty ‘extra’s’ that are frequently found in pre-packaged dinners, sandwiches, and fast food.

THEY EXERCISE REGULARLY

Keeping active is of course a massive factor in maintianing a healthy body weight.

If you aim to get in thirty minutes of cardio exercise every day, this should really help you to smash your weight loss goals. Depending on your genetics and starting weight, you can alter the length and vigor of your routine.

THEY PRACTICE INTERMITTENT FASTING

Intermittent fasting has long been a technique used by dietitians and fitness experts as a way to improve weight-loss and kick-start metabolism. People who keep slim are often massive advocates for the positive results of intermittent fasting.

Try sticking to only coffee or water until you have completed your morning workout as a way of keeping lean and strong all year round.

THEY GET ENOUGH SLEEP

Lack of sleep can lead to weight gain both directly and indirectly.

Being tired throughout the day can cause you to snack more on high sugar content foods to boost your energy. Lack of sleep can also slow down your metabolism as your body is too exhausted to function at maximum capacity. Plus, if you’re tired then you’re much more likely to pass on the daily exercise.
